Word of Mouth

SMPP Detailing for Mining & Industrial Projects

SMPP detailing brings structural steel, mechanical equipment, platework and piping documentation into a coordinated drawing package. Word of Mouth Trading & Detailing supports mining, industrial and fabrication project teams with 3D modelling, general arrangements, fabrication detailing and controlled technical documentation.

Based in Pretoria, WOM supports mining and industrial project teams in Gauteng and across South Africa through coordinated remote drawing-office services and project-site collaboration when required.

We work from project-approved engineering information and coordinate the interfaces that regularly cause rework: equipment positions, foundations, supports, piping routes, maintenance access and steelwork connections.

Our SMPP drawing-office scope

  • Structural: steel frames, access platforms, stairs, walkways, equipment supports, fabrication and erection information.
  • Mechanical: equipment arrangement drawings, machine and plant interfaces, installation details, maintenance clearances and support assemblies.
  • Platework: sheet and plate components, hoppers, chutes, tanks and fabrication information where included in the approved design scope.
  • Piping: mine services and process piping layouts, support coordination, general arrangements, sections and details.
  • Technical deliverables: drawing registers, bills of materials, model exchanges, revision-controlled drawing packages and fabrication files as required.

Mining and industrial applications

Relevant work includes workshops and maintenance bays, pump installations, conveyors, mine services, plant modification packages, elevated tanks and access structures. We can contribute to new projects, brownfield modifications and shutdown-driven documentation, subject to the available design information and site access arrangements.

Why project interfaces matter

An SMPP model must be more than a visual representation. The production workflow needs to identify who owns structural connections, piping supports, vendor tie-ins, lifting clearances, civil interfaces, and engineering approval. We identify coordination gaps early and raise requests for information instead of silently assuming design decisions.

Short on drawing-office capacity? We also provide outsourced CAD and project drawing-office support for defined SMPP workfronts, drawing revisions and multidisciplinary production packages.

Typical project workflow

  1. Receive scope of work, drawings, 3D references, equipment data and client documentation standards.
  2. Define workfronts, design responsibility boundaries, deliverable list and drawing issue priorities.
  3. Build and coordinate the agreed SMPP model and detailed arrangements.
  4. Prepare discipline-specific drawing packages for technical checking and approval.
  5. Incorporate authorised comments, release revisions and hand over agreed schedules and model formats.

Information to include in your RFQ

For a practical list of inputs, approvals, deliverables and exclusions, read our SMPP detailing scope checklist for mining and industrial projects.

Provide a scope narrative, existing drawings and models, areas or equipment list, preferred CAD platform, client engineering standards, expected outputs, required approvals and milestone dates. Where source information is incomplete, identify who will resolve engineering queries. For fabrication outputs such as assembly and single-part drawings, bills of material and NC1/DXF files, review the Tekla steel detailing RFQ checklist. For piping packages, use our mechanical and Plant 3D piping RFQ checklist to define line lists, GAs, isometrics and support interfaces.

Frequently asked questions

Can WOM support part of a larger SMPP contract?

Yes. A standalone work package, drawing-office resource assignment or discipline-defined production scope can be quoted against the available input information.

Which CAD platforms do you work with?

Depending on the package, WOM works with Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Plant 3D and Autodesk Inventor, with exchange formats agreed to match the client’s workflow.

Does detailing include engineering sign-off?

Not automatically. Any design, calculations or professional approvals must be clearly scoped and allocated to the appropriate qualified engineer.
