A skip trailer is a specialized heavy duty tow behind unit designed to carry open top bins (skips) loaded with demolition debris, landscaping waste or recyclable materials. For this 2.7m x 1.6m design, we started by defining the bin geometry in Autodesk Inventor: configuring a 1.52m³ payload volume, tapered sidewalls for easy discharge and a reinforced lip for crane or winch attachment. Once the bin sub assembly was complete, we modeled the twin axle chassis frame around SABS rated steel profiles, integrating pivot plates and hydraulic mounts to allow tilting and precise bin engagement.
With the core structure in place, we added secondary elements cross members, mudguards, access ladders and lashing points using Inventor’s adaptive components so that any dimensional change cascaded automatically. iLogic rules handled repetitive features like hole patterns, weld prep chamfers and bracket placements, ensuring consistency across dozens of identical mounts. After validating clearances and load paths with Inventor’s built in simulation tools, we exported critical geometry to AutoCAD to detail foundation plates, axle mount interfaces and hydraulic piping supports.
Finally, we generated a full suite of 2D fabrication drawings: exploded view callouts for hinge assemblies, section cuts of the bin to frame interface, and CNC ready DXF exports for laser profiling. Each drawing carried material specs, tolerance notes and weld sequence recommendations so the workshop could move directly from file to finished trailer without guesswork. The result is a turnkey skip trailer that balances strength, ease of use and rapid deployment for Voldeo Trailer’s toughest hauling jobs.
