Scope of Work and Details
Word of Mouth Trading was engaged by EnCon Consulting to design and draught a steel and civil expansion for an existing boiler house at an active mine. Our scope included:
- Importing and referencing existing structural and civil survey data
- Parametric modelling of steel frame extension: columns, rafters, bracing and purlins
- Detailing reinforced footings, concrete haunches and foundation interfaces
- Generating comprehensive 2D shop drawings and CNC ready DXF exports
- Producing full Bill of Materials with material specifications and tolerances
- Coordinating welding sequences and site installation guidelines
When EnCon Consulting engaged us to expand their aging boiler house, the challenge was clear: tie a new steel frame extension seamlessly onto the existing civil structure, all while meeting tight safety and operational standards in a live mining environment. Over the course of 40 intensive hours, we delivered a fully parametric 3D design and comprehensive 2D fabrication pack that covered everything from foundations and bracing to purlin layouts and plate connections.
We began by importing survey data of the original boiler hall into Autodesk Inventor, establishing datum planes and snap fit points for the new structure. Civil elements such as reinforced footings and concrete haunches were sketched out in AutoCAD, then tied back into our Inventor assembly as adaptive parts. From there, steel members columns, rafters, cross bracing and secondary purlins were built as intelligent profiles, complete with weld prep chamfers and bolt pattern iLogic rules to ensure consistency across dozens of identical connections.
Once the 3D model was finalized, we generated detailed shop drawings: exploded views of moment frame joints, section view callouts for plate gussets, and DXF exports for CNC profiling. Each drawing carried explicit tolerances, material callouts and SABS compliant notes, guaranteeing that the workshop could pick up the files and start cutting, welding and erecting without pause.
The result is a turnkey expansion that slots directly onto the mine’s existing infrastructure, engineered for strength, precision and rapid installation. From initial concept to workshop hand off, this project exemplifies our commitment to marrying civil and structural design using today’s most powerful CAD tools.
