Scope of Work and Details
Word of Mouth Trading was commissioned to fully draught a heavy duty car trailer (5.5m x 2m) to the client’s exacting specifications. Our scope included:
- Developing a parametric 3D CAD model of the dual axle chassis for a 2200kg payload
- Detailing all structural members, roller bed loading ramps and tie down points
- Producing comprehensive 2D fabrication drawings and DXF export files for CNC cutting
- Compiling a full bill of materials with SABS compliant material specs and tolerance checks
- Coordinating welding sequence recommendations and finish allowances for seamless shop assembly
A car trailer is a heavy duty towing platform designed to safely haul disabled, damaged or high value vehicles from point A to B. Equipped with loading ramps, winch anchors and secure tie down points, it allows recovery operators and transport firms to quickly load cars without permanent attachment. The 5.5m x 2m model offers extra length for larger vehicles and easier maneuvering compared to the more compact 4.5m x 2m version.
Using Autodesk Inventor, we built a fully parametric 3D model of the 5.5m x 2m car trailer defining chassis members, ramp geometry and winch mounts as adaptive components. We assembled sub assemblies for axles, suspension and deck panels, then generated detailed 2D shop drawings with exploded views and detailed section cuts. Inventor’s iLogic rules automated hole patterns and tie down locations, while the built in Bill of Materials and DWG/DXF export ensured CNC ready plates, laser cut profiles and accurate parts lists for seamless fabrication.
